Sweet 16

By: Ruby Woo

Water splashes on my bare feet as I think out loud, ” shit this waters’ cold!”

He extends his hand and my heart pounds. The repeated lies swarm my thoughts, ” what if he thinks I’m too young, although my birthday was in 4 days, what if he has a girlfriend?” Doubt joins the crowd. “What could he possibly see young little me?!”

Exhaling in the crisp summer air. It’s what I loved most about the tri state. The energy of summer was unlike no other and it brought special things to the area.

He was no different just two towns away and I never saw him around. Chocolate skin much like Omar Epps. I stumbled to speak when he spoke, ” wham” ? I had a thing for an accent!

Two hours prior…..

Summer 2006 was beginning too perfect,  nutcracker  in hand my cousin and I decided to patrol the sand shorelines while on summer break. Approaching the boardwalk two males were approaching the masculinity could be felt and seen in every strut. The dude on the left caught my attention. He stood about 5″11 dark skin with the build of Curtis jackson. It wasn’t until he spoke that I notice his light brown eyes. Conversations exchange and two hours later walking along the water, I was hoping he didn’t ask my age.

For you readers, as many might jokingly express that there must be something in the water, because I was built like a woman in her mid 20’s.

As we stroll our hand interlocked, he stopped walking and said, ” so my birthdays in 5 days, and…! Alarms ranging, I would have sworn that there was a small volcano erupting nearby. All of his words became fuzzy and I tried to follow along. But I was having a hard time breathing. My damn age was about to ruin the moment. And before I knew it, I had folded my arms and exclaimed, “shit”. He stopped speaking and tilted his head exaggerated. I chuckled and apologized and just then it dawned on me, ” we have the same birthday”!

Multiple dates and slumber parties minus sex.. and 2016 he’s still my sweet 16!
