24 Hours

By: Toni

It was a Saturday evening and she sat home alone on the phone with her best friend, Ashley. Every time she tried to speak, she was interrupted by Ashley’s boyfriend. Instead of hanging up, she dealt with the rudeness because she was just that bored.

“ Toni?”
“ Let me guess. You’re about to hang up right Ashley?”
“ Sorry. We just wanna lay down and watch a movie in silence.”
“ Jealous.”
“ Don’t be. I told you what to do, but you don’t wanna listen to me.”
“ I’m not that desperate Ashley.”
“ Online dating does not equal desperation. It’s 2016.”
“ I’ll pass.”
“ Don’t say I never tried to help you.”
“ Later Ash.”

Toni hangs up and then slowly peruses the app store. “I’m not that desperate. But I am that bored,” she sadly tells herself. She clicks “download” on the Soul Swipe app and begins setting up her page.

Sweet 16

By: Ruby Woo

Water splashes on my bare feet as I think out loud, ” shit this waters’ cold!”

He extends his hand and my heart pounds. The repeated lies swarm my thoughts, ” what if he thinks I’m too young, although my birthday was in 4 days, what if he has a girlfriend?” Doubt joins the crowd. “What could he possibly see young little me?!”

Exhaling in the crisp summer air. It’s what I loved most about the tri state. The energy of summer was unlike no other and it brought special things to the area.

He was no different just two towns away and I never saw him around. Chocolate skin much like Omar Epps. I stumbled to speak when he spoke, ” wham” ? I had a thing for an accent!

Two hours prior…..

Swirl

By: Zuri LoveLace

Zuri walked around her friend Denise’s house like it was her own. Hell, it might as well have been, as much time as she spent driving away from her own apartment to spend countless study hours over there. They were bunkering down for a long, long study session since they had two midterms coming up within days of each other. Zuri was pulling any and everything out of the fridge. Now Denise’s roommate on the other hand, seemed to never have concerns with studying at all, at least not when they were there. She would come in and out of her room every so often to talk to them which would turn into long conversations that had nothing to do with the work they were doing. She would play her music and bring it out into the kitchen where they were studying. Honestly, Zuri sometimes envied the way she could be so carefree and breeze though school, while her and Denise were pulling their hair out from the stress.
About halfway through their study session, Denise’s roommate decided to bring over a friend of hers, someone she met in one of her classes at school. From that point forward, all hopes of studying were lost.

Desparado

Sittin’ in a ole Monte Carlo… just kidding!

Butterflies filled her stomach as they finally met in person , smack in the middle of a suburban coldesac, surrounded by rows of twin houses and luxury cars in the driveway.

The setting totally shocked her, being that everything about him screamed urban paradise. From his tone, his dress, the things he spoke about , it all contradicted the present location. Guess you can never judge a book by the impersonator. no

Anyway, he stood 6’1, brown, handsome, with a gorgeous smile. She sat in the car, with chills from the crisp autumn air, mesmerized as he continued on  his tangent of saying all of the right things.

“Like….basically how I feel, I’m the type of dude that likes to have a girlfriend. I don’t remember the last time I was single,” he said.

She smiled, relieved. “So what does that mean?,” she asked.

“It means that I’ve been in relationships since I was able to date. I like relationships. I wanna be single for right now, but I know that won’t last long,” he said.

“Well I’m in no rush myself, however, I’m tired of wasting my time with guys who have no intention about working towards a relationship. It’s like no.. ” He rudely interrupted with a confident “Yeah I’m not them.”

Interrupting Chris…

By Mackenzie

Bailey had just broken up with Chris a few days ago. Needless to say, he cheated on her, as most college sophomores do, with a freshman who was oblivious to their 2 year long relationship. But Bailey was over crying. She was moving on. It was Thirsty Thursday and Bailey didn’t have any Friday classes.

She took some shots of Patron with her girls and made her way to the “U” to find herself a new Lincoln Lion to get her mind off of what happened.

She spotted him immediately. Just like last year at the Pep Rally, when Bailey locked eyes with Noah for the first time and felt her heart skip a beat. He was so fine. His eyes made her weak in the knees and when he licked his lips, Bailey felt like she could melt… then Chris put his arm around her shoulder and she snapped out of it.  But not tonight. There was no Chris to interrupt tonight.

Hope

By: Bleu Grae´

If it’s meant to be, it will be.  Hope thought as she purchased her plane ticket to New Mexico. Another $526.00 spent, round trip, to see her “boo thing”. To Hope, it wasn’t money wasted, more of an investment or experience.  Every time she purchased a flight, her conscience sent her on a guilt trip.

Why he doesn’t buy your tickets? He could at least pay half. After all, you’re putting in time and wasting money. You shouldn’t have to pay to fly miles to give away your pussy. You could do that with the nigga down the street, FOR FREE– her phone ranged interrupting her thoughts.

“ Hey”, she said as she spoke softly into the receiver.

Ashes to Ashes Part 2

By: Toni

She looked at the time on her computer screen what felt like every two seconds. It was now 6:01. I know he said 5:30, but he’s in the health profession. They never get off the time they say they are, she thought to herself. She reopened her notes and got back to work to kill more time. Her work bestie passed and did a double take- shocked to see her still sitting there. Normally she’s out of the door 5pm sharp.

“Girl, what are you still doing here?”

She wanted to tell her about the exciting doctor visit, but decided to keep this matter herself. What married woman wants to hear about another woman being asked out by a married man?

“I’m just finishing up this assignment. Don’t feel like doing work at home,” she lied.

“Right! Today is Thursday!”

She sat there confused. “What does that mean?”

“Greys. Scandal. How to get away with Murder!”

“Oh right! Yes I just want to eat my popcorn and sip on my wine. Not think about work.”

Her phone rang. An unknown number popped up and she quickly answered. She thought about canceling and using Shondaland Thursdays as an excuse, but in reality she was just extremely nervous.

Tequila Tequila

Kim and Rick had been messaging each other on Facebook for a few months. Kim posted something to a mutual friend’s Facebook page, it popped up on Rick’s timeline, he messaged her, and the rest was history.

Today, they decided it was time to meet face to face. Rick convinced Kim that they should stay in so he could prepare a romantic dinner at home for her. “A man that could cook?!” She thought to herself, “I must have hit the jackpot”.

He showed up around 7 pm with groceries and drinks in hand.  “Two bottles of tequila?” she asked. “One for each of us,” he said.

Mature Malarkey

By: Zuri Lovelace

She always looked forward to her family’s Superbowl parties every year.  Not because she was particularly interested in football, but because she had an excuse to drink and eat as much as she wanted and spent precious time with her family and their friends.  This year’s party was no different than the last, or so she thought.

While being completely oblivious to the game,  she eagerly awaited the halftime show and downed one Lime-A-Rita after another.  Her aunt had invited two of her friends, one an older man, closer to the age of her aunt and the other was slightly younger.  His name was Jordan.  She didn’t think too much of the small talk they shared here and there throughout the night, but he seemed nice enough.

A few weeks passed and she received a call from her aunt.  They caught up on the usual family highlights and groans about work/school and the daily grind.  They finished up their conversation and said their goodbyes when her aunt said, “Oh yeah, one more thing before I go.  You have a secret admirer.”
